Mother’s Day

**REMINDER** Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday on May 11th. Don’t forget to show your mother respect and thanks for what she has done. There are many ways to show your thanks. Some people have conflict with originality, but don’t worry because she’ll still be thankful for what you have done. If you’re lost with what to do here are a few ideas. You can get her a Mother’s Day card and write a little note to her inside. Try to make it as emotional as possible so you can try to get a few tears. Instead of a card, you can write her a letter thanking her for what she has done for you. Another idea is to buy her flowers. If you don’t know her favorite type of flower, roses will do the job. Another gift to mom is a poem that you can write for her. This can help with the conflict of originality because it should be coming from your heart, unless, you just print one off of the internet. I’ll give an example of a poem, which I wrote for my mother at the end. And finally, where this actually relates to my blog, you can give her breakfast in bed. You can do a classical breakfast. This classical breakfast includes fluffy eggs, toast, sausage links, pancakes with a slice of butter covered in maple syrup, a fruit bowl, and orange juice. This can give her a great start to the day so you guys can have fun and give thanks to your mother. Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is all about your mother and not yourself. And here is my poem for my mother.

Mother Poem

I know a beautiful woman.

This woman is strong without a doubt.

She may seem average,

But she is no ordinary person.

She is tall and curved in all the right places.

She can be evil at times,

But she will always be fair.

People can describe her as a person you shouldn’t mess with.

That’s because she is known to be dangerous.

This woman is sweet and outrageously funny.

She may be foolish,

But she is the wisest person I know.

She is the most loving and adoring person I know.

I know a beautiful woman.

This woman is my mother.

Burgers!!! Burgers!!! Burgers!!!

Burgers, burgers, burgers,
oh the joy you bring to me.
You lure me with your juiciness,
fill my heart with your warmth.

You come in so many different ways,
but no need to worry,
I’ll take you just the way you are,
and treat you you like you should be,
I’ll still love you like you’re the best.

Know what I love most about you,
your juicy tomatoes,
your sweet pickles,
your crispy bacon,
your crunchy lettuce,
your soft and melted cheddar cheese.
There’s a variety of things to love about you!

will accent your dinner table just right.

After reading these they don’t seem that funny to me. However if you like them feel free to look for more and try to entertain me in the comments. These humorous jokes were provided by e-CookBooks at http://www.e-cookbooks.net/humor.htm

From Horrible to Outrageously Excellent

Less than a decade ago, or to be more precise, eight years ago, the U.S had some difficulties when it came to feeding the Olympians. There was infrastructure and difficulties accommodating the number of athletes who would be dining in the village. Some complained about the food not reaching it’s potential. U.S Alpine skier Resi Stiegler compared the food to cat food. He told reporters that even the pasta was horrible. I do wonder how it is possible to make horrible pasta. It is one of the easiest things to make. There was also a case of food poisoning from which many suffered. This was very unacceptable for the Olympics.

Now that we’re in 2014, the feeding of the Olympians is no longer an issue. The U.S has taken matters into their own hands to insure that nutrition doesn’t negatively impact the performances of their athletes.

Now that we know the Olympians are being taken care of let’s see what’s cooking in the kitchen. The U.S Olympic skiers and snowboarders chef is Chef Allen Tran. Chef Allen seems to be cooking up a storm. For the skiers and snowboarders of the U.S Chef Allen has been making great things such as smokehouse almond hummus, almond cheese ball, classic granola, and many more other things for the team enjoy.

As I went over what Chef Allen has been making for the athletes I noticed that most things consists of almonds. So I decided to do a little research on almonds to see what’s so good about them. A quarter cup of almonds contains a lot of nutrients. 49% of it has biotin which boost your metabolism. 40.2% of it has vitamin E which acts as an antioxidant for the body. 26.5% of it has manganese which has many benefits. Some of these benefits include healthy bone structure, bone metabolism, and helping to create essential enzymes for building bones. Almonds has many nutrients and benefits to the body. This shows that Chef Allen is aware of the health of the athletes and cooking healthy food to benefit them.

Trinidad & Tobago!!!

My while family is from Trinidad & Tobago. After most of my family came to live in America they brought their culture along with them into a new world. However, my family wasn’t the only ones to do so. If you were to go the city I was born and raised in, Brooklyn, New York, you would see many different stores selling the types of food that my family cooked and ate within their country. One of my favorite dishes from Trinidad along with my family is doubles.

Throughout my years in life so far I’ve come to realize that doubles is a weird name for a dish. The name of a dish usually describes or gives you an idea of what you’re going to eat. However, the name doubles doesn’t justify what you’re eating. When I first had doubles I didn’t know what to expect. It was just a weird name to give a dish.

Doubles is one of the top ten favorite dishes in Trinidad & Tobago according to islands.com. As my family says it, “It’s deh best.” Yes I noticed that I didn’t say the. That is because there is an accent to it so the pronunciation would obviously be different.

Doubles is made out of two pieces of bara bread stuffed with channa. Another word for channa that you are used to is chick peas. The channa that is stuffed in between the bara bread is curried. It’s not dry or too runny but it’s rather moist. After the channa is stuffed into the two pieces of bara bread you can choose to add a spoonful of tamarind sauce or mango with pepper. If you’re a newcomer to Caribbean food I would recommend a spoonful of tamarind. If you’re a really daring person then by all means you should jump right in and try that spoonful of mangoes with pepper. All I have to say is good luck.

Let’s Talk About RICE!!!

Let’s talk about rice people. Rice is the basis of life. Most of the time rice is in every dish worldwide. For example, rice is in Akki Rotti from India. Another example is rice in Arroz Caldo from the Philippines. There are many more countries where rice is part of most of their dishes.

There are also different types of rice in the world. The most common types of rice are brown basmati, white basmati, long grain brown, short grain brown, jasmine, sushi, long grain white, and wild.

Fun Fact – Did you know that rice is healthy for you. Well, mainly brown rice is. White rice compared to brown rice is full of starch and sugars. Therefore white rice isn’t really good for you. Brown rice still has the hull and bran which the white rice doesn’t. That is because white rice went through a refining process. Another fun fact: before white rice went through the refining process brown rice and white rice looked exactly the same.

Here are nine reasons why brown rice is healthier than white rice.
1. It is rich in selenium
2. It is high in manganese
3. It is rich in naturally-occurring oils
4. It promotes weight loss
5. It is considered whole grain
6. It is rich in anti-oxidants
7. It is high on fiber
8. It is a slow-release sugar
9. It is perfect baby food

Healthy Vs. Unhealthy

I understand that this is suppose to be a blog about peoples favorite dishes from their culture but this is a very serious matter. Have you ever noticed the difference in prices for healthy and unhealthy food? Well I have. Healthy food is very expensive compared to unhealthy food. Many wonder why other people’s sizes are rather large. They usually blame it on what they eat which is partially true. It may be due to what they can afford and the expense of living off of healthy food.

This diagram gives specific examples of the types of food that we eat and the prices for each. What we can take from this diagram is that it is more expensive to eat healthy. The blue is represented as what a healthy person would eat. The orange is represented as what an unhealthy person would eat. As shown on the diagram dried apricots are $2.97. A medium order of french fries from McDonald’s is $1.18. It may not seem like a drastic change but it is enough to make a person who can’t afford much to go for the cheapest thing on the menu.

Reasons for people being obese and overweight can’t be entirely because of what they eat. It is mainly on what they can afford to eat. You shouldn’t be paying more to live and eat healthy. I truly believe that this is unjust and should be changed.
